Reporting to the Plant Manager, this position will be responsible for managing the quality control and quality assurance of all products produced at the Edmonton Cement Plant.

You MUST HAVE Cement Plant experience to be considered for this role.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Manage the quality control function of the plant to ensure the product meets specifications and customer satisfaction.

  • Monitor and control product quality through all stages of production from raw materials to finished products

  • Supervise employees and activities of the Quality Control Department

  • Supervise and mentor the Plant Chemist

  • Manage the CIP efforts at the Plant

  • Support CAPEX projects as required

  • Manage the inspection and testing activities of employees in the cement physical and chemistry labs

  • Oversee the quality control and quality assurance programs to ensure compliance with CSA, ASTM, and API standards

  • Conduct investigative analysis, research, and development of new products

  • Develop new methods and implement new technology to improve testing procedures

  • Monitor raw material quality and impact on plant processes and product quality

  • Act a resource for internal and external customers regarding quality

  • Stay current with changes to CSA, ASTM, and API standards and represent the plant on various groups as required

  • Ensure compliance requirements are met through organizational and procedural measures including implementation of Group guidelines, completion of required training, and monitor compliance

  • Proactively manage safety and health of employees to continuously improve the company’s safety and health performance

  • Determine laboratory strategy to align with plant and company goals and objectives for product quality

  • Serve as plant technical expert on cement quality

  • Provide technical expertise to maintain, calibrate, and optimize the lab XRF and cross-belt analyzers to insure accurate and precise analysis of all materials

  • Maintain up to date and accurate quality control records and lab reports

  • Foster a close working relationship with Sales & Marketing and customers

  • Interpret quality control test results, isolate problems, and resolve them

  • Prepare and authorize letters of certification and mill test reports

  • Evaluate potential beneficial use of raw materials for possible use in cement manufacturing process

  • Responsible for maintaining up to date quality control records.

  • Serve as the liaison with other departments in adjusting and setting internal set points for process operations to maximize product quality.

  • Ensures the accuracy of lab equipment including its utilization and results. Provides technical expertise to Maintain, calibrate and optimize the lab XRF to insure accurate and precise analysis of all materials analyzed. Develops new standards and upgrades calibrations as required.

  • Provides training and support to lab personnel and production employees in the performance of their duties.

  • Interprets quality control test results, isolates quality problems, and resolves them by communicating with Lab and Process Department employees.

  • Monitors quality from the quarry through raw grinding, burning, cement grinding, and shipping areas of the plant. Uses statistical methods to track quality. Collaborates with Production Management to address concerns and make recommendations for improvements both proactively and reactively.

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or relevant technical discipline

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the cement industry This is a requirement.

  • Strong management skills preferably in a unionized environment

  • Working knowledge of modern lab equipment including x-ray technology

  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills

  • Experience on leading quality assurance programs

  • Proficient in MS Office and SAP programs

  • Understanding of the production process and ability to work in a heavy industrial environment

  • Thorough understanding of cement chemistry, X-ray, advanced chemical, physical and microscopic analytical and testing procedures, XRF, Spectrophotometry, wet chemical methods, physical testing, and clinker/cement microscopy

  • Understanding of the chemistry of raw mix, clinker, and cement.

Work Environment:

  • Role operates in a manufacturing environment with moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity, elevated noise levels, and dusty conditions.
